Emergency Preparedness Update for April 2017

Hi, Everybody:  Our EP Meeting for April is this Saturday, April 8th, 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the Flyaway Bus Terminal in the Community Meeting Room on the 2nd Floor.  Take the elevator INSIDE the building, or the steps OUTSIDE. The Flyaway is located at 7610 Woodley Ave., (NE Corner of Saticoy and Woodley) in Lake Balboa.  Plenty of FREE PARKING in the spaces closest to the street.
DAN TOMLINSON, retired Police Officer, HAM/FRS/GRS/Walki-Talkie Radio guru, EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) expert and all-around good guy will be speaking to us this month about the Active Shooter situation.  You'll learn what to do if caught in this awful position to protect yourself and others around you.  Sadly, we're hearing more and more about these happening, and while you may not experience one personally, knowing what to do if you ARE unlucky enough to be caught up in one could save your own life and others' as well!
Also, I wanted to let you know about a fun CERT happening this Sunday, April 9th from 12:30 to 2:30 PM at the CERT Quarterly Community Meeting at 5056 Van Nuys Blvd. in the Auditorium in Sherman Oaks, CA 91403.  You do NOT have to be a CERT member to attend.
ERIN HUEY, Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Instructor (for CERT III credentials), will lead us in a thorough and fun "Review and Hands-On" training specifically covering How to Identify and Treat Common Disaster Wounds; and how to re-assess those wounds if professional care is delayed.  We will practice applying dressings and using pressure bandages, using soft and hard splints.  (CERT manual pages:  4-25 thru 4-43).  We will also review and practice "Head to Toe" assessments (CERT manual pages:  4-14 thru 4-19).
CHRISTY ADAIR, LAFD CERT Battalion 10 Coordinator will bring practice dressings and bandages as well as some splinting materials.  For the "Head to Toe" practice, we will be placing our patients on actual red & yellow tarps -- lining them up "head to toe" so that you can feel what it is like to work in a real Treatment Area.  Suggest you pack your knee pads or bring some kind of soft towel for your knees!
Don't forget the FREE Fire Safety Training taught by FIREFIGHTER MITCH MCKNIGHT of the LA City Fire Department CERT Unit on Saturday, 4/29/17, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM at SOS Survival Products in the C.Denise Edwards Training Center, 15705 Strathern St., #11, Van Nuys, CA 91406.  The class is FREE, but you do need to register by calling (800) 479-7998.  The store is 1-1/2 blocks east of Woodley, between Saticoy and Roscoe!
Also, be sure to start saving those pennies and dimes and dollar bills for the big Sidewalk Sale at SOS Survival Products on Fridayand Saturday, June 2nd and 3rd.  This is their only BIG SALE of the year, and well worth your time.  Introduce yourself to JEFF EDELSTEIN, the owner (before the sale).  If you're serious about CERT and disaster preparedness, he'll probably become one of your best friends!!!
Looking forward to seeing you Saturday, Sunday, April 29th and June 2nd and 3rd!
