Emergency Preparedness April 2016 Update

f9ec51e8e02de9265d304d93b2e61349

Hi Everybody:  Lots going on right now so let's get to it!
Our Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council Emergency Preparedness/Communications Meeting is this Saturday, April 9th, at The Flyaway Bus Terminal, 2nd Floor Community Meeting Room, at 7610 Woodley Avenue (NE Corner of Saticoy and Woodley.  GO INSIDE and take the elevator at the north end of the building, or take the steps outside the building.  Plenty of FREE PARKING in the short term lot out front in the spaces closest to the street.
We don't know if TEOTWAWKI ("prepper" abbreviation for "the end of the world as we know it"), is just around the corner or not, but it's definitely a good idea to get prepared now for ANY emergency or disaster.  What (other than earthquakes!), emergencies/disasters should we here in Lake Balboa/the Valley/Los Angeles be preparing for?  And are there things more important than stocking up on food and water that should be at the top of our "Preparedness" lists?  Maybe not, maybe so.  But if so, what are they?  Come join this thought-provoking discussion!  And bring your own ideas!  A prize for the best suggestion!
Upcoming Elections for the Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council Board
To vote on line, you must pre-register to vote at www.empowerla.org/vrp up until midnight     on Sunday, 4/10/16.  Vote on line through April 17th.
To vote in person, you do not need to pre-register.  Just show up on Sunday, April 17th,     from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, at Gault Street Elementary School, 17000 Gault Street, (1 block     south of Sherman Way, one block west of Balboa, 1 block North of Hart Street), in Lake     Balboa.  If you live, work, own property, have kids in school, worship, or belong to an
organization (like this Emergency Preparedness Committee in Lake Balboa), you are eligible
    to vote in this election.
Mark Seigel is holding a Ham Radio Tech License Class that begins Thursday, April 7th and ends May 26th.  That's 8 Thursday nights.  Classes begin at6:30 PM and end around 9:00 PM.  Some classes may be a little shorter, some a little longer.  Classes will be held at C & M Printing, 10034 Commerce Ave., in Tunjunga.  Book for the class is The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, Third Edition.  Costs for the class are $30.00 for instruction, $30.00 for the book, $15.00 for the FCC test on May 26th.  Prepayment not necessary -- you can pay at the first class session.  If you wish, Mark can get the book for you, or they can be purchased at Ham Radio Outlet in Burbank.  You can reach Mark to let him know you wish to attend by calling him at (818) 430-5244, or email him at mark.seigel@gmail.com.
Also, Roozy Moabery is instructing a Ham Radio Class on Saturday, April 16th, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (with a 1/2 hour break for lunch).  Location to be announced. There will be 3 examiners, and there will be a $15.99 exam fee (cash or check), for the test.  This program will require significant studying prior to class on the 16th.  A study guide will be sent out.  Examiners require a minimum of 12 students.  Please notify Sue DuBrin at (818) 445-3211 or sdubrin@ethanchristopher.com ASAP if you wish to attend.
Start Saving Your Pennies NOW!!!  The SOS Survival Products Sidewalk Sale (their biggest sale of the year!), is less than two months away -- Fridayand Saturday, June 3rd and 4th!  And again, many thanks to Jeff Edelstein, Owner of SOS, for letting us hold last month's EP Meeting in the Training Room at there.  There was a "SNAFU" (situation normal, all fouled up), with the Flyaway facilities, and Jeff very graciously offered to let us meet at his place!  We believe we have the Flyaway secured for our meetings for the rest of the year (I have it in writing from them!), so there shouldn't be any further problems.
Don't forget our Ham Radio Net, 9:00 AM, this Sunday, April 10th, Simplex, 145.570, and our FRS/GMRS/Walkie-Talkie Net at 9:45 AM on Channel 5.  We had 9 check-ins on our FRS/GMRS net last month!  Let's see if we can beat that this Sunday!  Remember -- this will be a great way for us to communicate within our own Neighborhoods in the event of a disaster!
Please take a look at the Agenda, and plan to join us on Saturday!  Questions?
