NEW Developments and/or Redevelopments and Land Re-Categorization at VNY Airport Impacts Lake Balboa

On April 19, 2023 Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) opened doors to a “Community Open House” at the Airtel Plaza Hotel to unveil their vision of future land use options at Van Nuys airport (VNY).  The event was followed by a virtual presentation of the “VNY Vision Study” on April 22, 2023.  LAWA’s Virtual presentation can be viewed online here:

Neighborhood Councils and stakeholders across the San Fernando Valley have pointed out that the three “Vision Board” options presented for Public Comment (Alternatives A, B and C) were void of accompanying research, data or studies to otherwise demonstrate to the public what potential benefit or potential consequences may result to their community, schools, parks, places of worship and local businesses from the alternatives LAWA presented.  LAWA also failed to present any data or research to indicate that any of the options presented were viable or if
environmental conditions and/or limitations were a consideration in their design process.  LAWA opted to circumvent the VNY CAC Vision Study Ad Hoc before moving forward with both their events and now indicate that they are ready to choose from one of their own three designs:

  1. THANK YOU! This is so alarming. I just looked at the boards via that link and I can't believe LAWA even put those out there. What was the point?! They are clearly unvetted and offer no real insight or vision or tangible direction at all. Hopefully our new council member will put a STOP to this negligent bulldozing. We need a forensic audit of VNY operations and annual income vs expenditures. There should be no "vision" of redevelopment until the City inarguably knows exactly where VNY sits financially and how much income from available parcels is or is not required for long-term sustainability vs critically needed mitigation efforts. No vision can be considered until a realistic forecast is done and supported by current research data, and to address such a forecast, we need a forensic audit that eliminates any assumption or rhetoric.
